Short Fills

Giving you generous portions of your favourite flavours, shortfills offer exceptional convenience. They can also represent better value for your hard-earned cash. At Vapester, our range features a wonderful array of shortfill e liquids but what are they and would shortfills be right for you?

What is a short fill?

Short fills (or shortfills) are simply bottles which are not filled to the top with e liquid. They contain nicotine-free (0mg) flavours and space to add your nicotine shots. Short fills are available containing 25ml, 50ml or 100ml of e liquid. In each case, 1/6 of the bottle is left free for the addition of nicotine shots. For Instance, with a 50ml shortfill, there is room to add a single 10ml nic shot. With a 100ml shortfill, there’s room to add two nicotine shots.

Why is e liquid sold in short fill bottles?

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced vaper, you will have noted that most e liquids are available in volumes of just 10ml. You won’t be surprised to hear that this annoying situation is the result of EU legislation. The European Tobacco Directive (TPD) was issued in 2016. It encompassed vaping even though no tobacco is involved and stipulated that vape juice containing nicotine must be sold in volumes not exceeding 10ml.

It is hard to know what the officials at the EU hoped to achieve with this rule. Vapers have remained free to purchase as much e-liquid as they wish, they just need to buy more bottles. This situation was clearly a pain in the proverbial for manufacturers and so it was inevitable that they would seek to find ways to circumvent the restrictions. And they succeeded!

The answer was to sell nicotine-free e liquids as the regulation didn’t apply to those. To make life easier for vapers, these 0mg juices were placed in short fill bottles which afforded room to add nicotine shots. Once the first short fills began to appear, all of the manufacturers jumped onto the bandwagon and short fills were everywhere.

Are short fills for right for you?

There is now a ridiculously enormous choice of short fill flavours. Most of the big brands offer short fill versions of their e liquids. From a Dinner lady shortfill to a Charlie’s Chalk Dust Shortfill, the most popular flavours are all there. However, this doesn’t mean that they are good choices for everyone. This is primarily because short fills tend to contain high VG e-liquids which are suitable only for sub-ohm devices.

Why? Well, the issue is nicotine strength which is also impacted by the pesky TPD. A 60ml short fill contains 50ml of vape juice, leaving room for one 10ml nicotine shot. If that shot has a strength of 18mg (the maximum under the regulations is 20mg), the completed juice in the short fill will have a strength of only 3mg. That’s fine for sub ohm vapers but not for ex-smokers with low-wattage e cigs requiring a bigger hit.

If short fills were to contain high PG bases, the bottles would need to be left half empty and vapers would have to invest in several nicotine shots for each bottle. There would be no added convenience as vapers would simply be buying a huge number of nicotine shots instead of a mountain of small e liquid bottles.

The long and short of it (forgive the pun) is that right now, short fills are only appropriate for sub ohm vapers.

How to mix a shortfill liquid

You mix your juice in the same way, whether you have a Kanzi short fill, Pacha Mama Short fill or any flavour. To add your nicotine shot to a short fill bottle, you should remove the lid of the bottle followed by the inner top cap. Add your nicotine and then pop the top cap of the short fill bottle back into place. Always check that this is fitted correctly. Replace the lid of the bottle and then shake it for a few minutes to mix the nicotine with the e liquid.

So far, so simple, but there are potential complications if you are looking to achieve the right nicotine strength and VG/PG ratio. This is because nicotine shots are available in a variety of strengths and become diluted in the finished juice. To make matters even more complex, E liquids feature different VG/PG ratios, and these will be altered by the PG base of the nicotine shot.

If you are a maths prodigy, all well and good. If you are a normal human being, make use of a shortfill calculator! Otherwise you could find that your Heisenberg shortfill is delicious but doesn’t hit the mark for cloud production or nicotine fix.

Shortfill e liquids and Brexit

You are sentient human being with common sense and so you will be thinking what the ****? The EU have burdened you with these pointless complications when all you want is bigger bottles of e-liquid. For the time being, bigger bottles mean short fill bottles. But there could be hope on the horizon – Brexit.

While nothing will change in the short term, Brexit could eventually mean that larger volumes of vape juice become available in the UK. The UK authorities are certainly more accepting of vaping than the governments of many countries. This could eventually result in UK vapers being graced with more sensible vaping regulations.
